THINK ON IT: Is opportunism driving your business?
We all love bluebirds; those opportunities that come up out of nowhere and drive growth. The low-maintenance account that falls into your lap. Getting a “yes” when we really expected a “no.”
But not all opportunities are created equal. Some bluebirds are actually buzzards in disguise. If pursued, they'll pick apart your strategy and consume precious resources that would otherwise be used to accelerate your core mission. A buzzard is that account that seemed too good to be true, but you pursued it anyway… and now regret it. Or that reliable client that negotiated a discount for services… right before a significant cost increase on your side.
The problem is, if you don't have a clear strategy, all opportunities look like bluebirds—until it's too late.
Opportunism is the chief enemy of strategy, for it comes with little effort, yet promises great results. Take a moment and reflect on the present opportunities your business is pursuing. Are they "on mission" or would they, if won, pick away like a buzzard, at your greater yes?
Opportunism is engaging in tactics without a strategy. And without strategy, you can’t make progress toward your clearly defined vision.
Here's a vital question to ask when apparent bluebirds show up at the window of your business: Would we pursue this opportunity over our present ones if it hadn't suddenly appeared?
“If you don't have a strategy, you're part of someone else's strategy."
